Summary of Real Work Duties

Plans and administers medically prescribed physical therapy or occupational therapy for patients experiencing pelvic pain, incontinence, pregnancy- and postpartum-related conditions, pelvic organ prolapse, bowel and bladder dysfunction, sexual dysfunction, and other pelvic health concerns — restoring function, confidence, and quality of life through comprehensive movement, functional activity, and neuromusculoskeletal interventions.

We have quite a few pre-PA, pre-Pt, pre-med, nursing etc students in our internship because it’s a fun way to get patient care hours since patients are coming in on a regular basis and it’s an opportunity to really build connections with patients. Our goals with the internship include:
1.  Get students started in the medical field without experience—all training is done on the job.
2.  Get students earning patient care hours. . .during our 1 year internship they can earn up to 900 hours.  (Students work either 12 or 18 hours a week on shifts from 7 am to 1 p.m. In the mornings on either MWF or TH.   The afternoon shifts are from 1 p.m. To 7 p.m. On either T TH or MWF afternoons and we are open on Saturday mornings from 7 am to noon.)
3. Give opportunities for our Physical Therapists to get to know the student so they can help them by writing them a letter of recommendation.  We want to build a trust and rapport between the PT and student.   (Students who fulfill the 1 year internship, are eligible for a letter of recommendation.)4.  Help students have experiences with patients where they build a professional relationship and are part of a team and see the progress that they can write about on their Grad school applications.
5.  Help students have experiences with patients that prepare them for interviews.
6.  Students may fulfill an internship requirement for their major or earn 4 credit hours.

Responsibilities

  • Help the PT in all aspects of patient care

Responsibilities

Schedules appointments and enters appointment dates and time into computerized scheduler.  
Records when appointments have been filled or canceled.  
Upon patient cancellation, emails or notes to scheduled therapist reason for cancellation and indicates if patient has rescheduled.  
Telephones or writes patients to remind them of appointments.  
Greets and directs patients, salespeople, and visitors.  
Answers telephone and either responds to inquiry or directs caller to appropriate personnel.  
Assist with other medical office needs, including registering patients and receiving payments for services provided.
